One Week to Go: Make Every Practice Count!

Here we are—our final practice check-in! At this point, all Piano Guild students should be practicing every day. During this last week, consistency matters more than ever.
Whenever possible, try to sit with your child during practice for a little extra moral support. Your encouragement can make a big difference during the final stretch. (Of course, if your child does their best work independently, there's no need to interrupt their routine!)
If Your Program Is Performance-Ready...
Many students now have their entire program prepared, with notes, dynamics, articulation, and pedal (where needed) all in place. If that's the case, it's time to practice differently.
Instead of repeatedly playing each piece from beginning to end, avoid doing multiple "run-throughs." Too many full performances can actually encourage students to rush, lose focus, and let little details slip. Quality practice is far more valuable than simply playing through the music over and over.
Instead:
Before you begin to play your piece, think about the dynamics that start and end the song.. Prepare your foot on the pedal if the piece calls for pedal, and have your other foot firmly on the floor. Imagine how the first few measures sound, take a few deep breathes, and begin.
If that piece went well, you are done with that one and can move on.
If you made a mistake on a piece or a scale, identify the section and practice it. Isolate it and play it correctly 3–5 times in a row to rebuild confidence and consistency.
Once those spots feel secure, perform the piece one time from beginning to end, paying careful attention to every detail, and have fun!.
If You're Still Feeling Behind...
If your child isn't quite where they hoped to be, don't panic. One focused week of practice can make a tremendous difference. The key is to use practice time wisely.
Begin with a challenge. Maybe it's the memory at the top of page two, or a trickly final passage. You know what needs your attention. You can focus and do amazing things, one line at a time.
Write out your wins. You have some songs complete, so put them on the DONE list. This will help your mind calm down so you can focus on the few items that might remain unfinished.
Breaking practice into shorter sessions can also be incredibly effective. Four focused 15-minute sessions throughout the day often accomplish far more than one long practice. These shorter sessions help students stay engaged while making noticeable improvements, and you get four individual wins instead of one!
⭐ Remember to practice your required scales and cadences every day too. Since they'll be the judge's first impression of your playing, make them confident, steady, and musical! I know I listed the scales twice--they are important😊
⭐ Don't forget to log your practice time for this week's Practice Challenge! Every focused minute counts, and these final days are an opportunity to build confidence before auditions. Plus we will have some fun prizes coming your way as a bonus for your hard work!
You've all made so much progress this year, and it shows. It's time to let your preparation shine. Most of the hard work is behind you, and now you get to share your music. Stay focused, enjoy making music, and finish strong—we can't wait to celebrate with you.
