Little Steps, Big Leaps & Practice Streaks

When students know what they’re working toward, practice usually feels more focused and more rewarding too. Instead of just playing through pieces, there’s a sense of direction. Even small goals can build significant momentum, and it’s often those small wins that keep students going onto bigger things musically.

In lessons, we often ask students what they want to work on, and what their musical goals are. It might be something simple like learning the first page of a piece, smoothing out a tricky section, or playing a scale a little faster each week. It doesn’t have to be big to matter. Without that kind of focus, practice can feel a bit aimless, and a student can wonder if they are advancing. But when there’s a clear goal, students tend to listen more closely and notice details they might have missed before.

To keep supporting our students we just launched a month-long practice challenge, which has been really fun to get started. Each day, students are tracking their practice time on a piano key, building a visible streak over the month. Every student has a personalized practice goal, so it looks a little different for everyone.

Next week, we’ll reveal the prizes. The timing is intentional—students will have already been practicing for a week before seeing them, so the focus stays on consistency and not just the reward. A 28-day streak earns an extra raffle entry, and students also earn entries for each week they meet their goal.

I’ve already seen a lot of students getting excited just talking about a challenge that has the chance for a practice streak! It is rewarding to challenge yourself and see what you are capable of when you really go for it!

Sometimes it's the little steps over time that allow students to make unexpected big leaps in their playing or understanding of music. It's so rewarding when you can see the lightbulb go on for a student.
