Happy Practice Wins!

Happy students, happy parents, happy practice! These are our goals as we move into the final stretch of our Piano Guild Auditions. I’d like to share a few simple suggestions that can help make this a positive and encouraging experience for students and families. Every child approaches preparation differently, and there is no “one right way” to do this. Our goal is steady progress, confidence, and celebrating effort along the way. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s preparation, progress, and helping your child feel confident and ready to share the music they’ve have devoted themselves to learning..

We all need small wins along the way so that we feel encouraged and on top of things. Here are a few fun ideas to help your family sail through these last weeks before auditions. Feel free to adapt them in whatever way works best for your family. Younger children often do better with more immediate rewards, while older students may be happy working toward something they can earn after several days of effort.

Create a Practice Reward Basket 🍫

Fill a basket with small treats, stickers, coupons, or other inexpensive rewards. Your child may choose one after each practice day when they practice with focus and a positive attitude. For those of us with a sweet tooth, it’s amazing how motivating a little chocolate can be during practice time.😊 (Remember, a focused 15-minute practice session is often far more valuable than a distracted 30-minute one!)

Plan a Weekly Celebration 🍦

Mark your calendar for a special outing after your child's piano lesson each week until the big day. There are only a few weeks left! A trip for ice cream, a favorite snack, or another simple treat can give students something fun to anticipate as they work toward their goal. These little traditions can make the final weeks of preparation feel special and rewarding.

Keep Them Company ☕

Practice can sometimes feel lonely, especially when there are other activities happening around them that can be distracting or make them feel like they're missing out. Simply sitting with your child while they practice can make a tremendous difference. They enjoy being in your presence, and your attention communicates that their efforts matter.

If sitting still isn’t easy for you, bring along something enjoyable to do. Work on a jigsaw puzzle, sip a cup of coffee, flip through a magazine, knit, or even sit and pet the dog. The goal isn’t to monitor every note—it’s to create a calm, supportive atmosphere while your child shares their music with you. These moments often become some of the sweetest family memories.

Celebrate Milestones 🎉

The day your child can successfully play their entire program from beginning to end is worth celebrating! Make a big deal out of it—they’ve earned it.

Here are a few fun ideas:

• Let them choose what’s for dinner.

• Make a favorite dessert or special treat.

• Create a certificate and present it at dinner.

• Draw a picture or make a sign to hang on the refrigerator so everyone knows the goal has been achieved. 

• Record their favorite piece or the whole set of pieces.

• Take a family selfie or photo to commemorate the accomplishment.

• Let your child choose a family game or movie for the evening.

• Call or video chat with a grandparent or loved one to share the good news, or even better, have your child play a few songs for them.

  
  

The celebration doesn’t need to be elaborate. What matters is taking a moment to recognize the hard work, perseverance, and discipline that made the accomplishment possible. These intentional moments of celebration matter. When we pause to recognize our children’s hard work and perseverance, we help them develop a positive relationship with music, confidence in tackling challenges, and the understanding that effort is something worth celebrating. The lessons they learn through preparing for an audition often reach far beyond the piano bench.

These ideas extend well beyond Piano Guild preparation. They can help with many kinds of goals—preparing for recitals-(also coming soon!😃), auditioning for a role in a musical, working toward long-term achievements like Eagle Scout, or learning how to break down bigger school projects when the school year begins again. These same small, steady habits can also be a helpful reminder for parents in pursuing our own goals, too.

Audition season is a wonderful opportunity to teach our children that big accomplishments are achieved one small step at a time. Every practice session, every polished section, and every milestone reached deserves recognition. Before long, they’ll be walking into their audition knowing they are prepared, supported, and ready to shine.
